Oxytocin

Understanding oxytocin

Oxytocin is released during labour and increases uterine contractions at the time of delivery. It also causes the ejection of milk from the breast, by causing contraction of the myo-epithelial cells. It is the hormone that is used in the form of a drip to induce labour in women who do not enter labour naturally and is commonly known as a “Syntocinon” drip.
